Benji Tranter is a folk singer/songwriter from Hereford who lives in London. Today what's on offer is a track that he describes as a christmas songs and 80's pop pastiche. It definetely makes me think of 80's christmas jumpers and Wham! Download it and when Christmas comes around this year, you can add it to your own original x-mas playlist and advoid all the overplaying cheesy christmas singles. There'll be no cars big as bars or pistols carved out of wood, just some decent singer/songwriters, that's how it's going to be going down in my house anyway.

Rachael Yamagata is a singer/songwriter from Arlington, Virginia. Here's her 2011 single 'Starlight' taken from the album 'Chesapeake'. Having left a major label, she said in interviews that "there was no attempt or requirement to be anything but what we felt like doing in the room." For fans of Fiona Apple, PJ Harvey and Tori Amos. Also, ignore the man in the photo and just enjoy the music. Jenny O. is from Los Angeles and I've read that her music reflects California's 'roots of sunshine and slow-paced atmosphere' and after listening to all her tracks on 'SoundCloud' I felt quite spaced out. You can watch the video for this track here. 'Well, OK Honey' is the first track from her 2010 self released 'Home EP'. I discovered her music whilst working on my gig guide and saw that Birmingham Promoters had booked her for a show at the Hare & Hounds in Kings Heath, tomorrow night and looked her up out of curiosity, liked what I heard and then went on a mini-mission to find this download to share with you. Her voice and songs remind me of a cheery upbeat Alessi's Ark. Have a listen and if you're in the area tomorrow, there's far worse ways to spend a Tuesday evening then going to see her. Arp Attack are a three-piece from Southampton. I first saw them at The Marrs Bar where they took to the stage dressed (disarmingly) as crocodiles, costumes retained from their recent music video shoot for Crocodile Tears. This only lasted for one song before they stripped out of them, it was a lot of flesh for just one stage. At one point, Frankie said the band had a new ep and we (the audience) could get copies off her after the show in exchange for a hug. Needless to say, after they finished playing I found her by the bar, said 'Hey, so about this new ep...' and held out my arms for a hug... she said "Yeah, they're £4." I jestured with my arms again but again '£4." Ah well. I also brought a fairly cool looking handmade t-shirt off the drummer which had ARP ATTACK written in big big letters across the chest in gold glitter. Sadly, that all went an unfortunate shade of green after a couple of spins in the washing machine. I know all this doesn't tell you anything about their music, but you can listen to the track below before downloading, plus you can always watch this. I sent this video to the organisers of Blissfields who were putting on a Road to Blissfields gig in Southampton. I told them to book Arp Attack in as a trial run and they obviously delivered on their end as they were then asked to play at the main festival. Horray. Signals. are a band from Southampton/Isle of Wight. In their words: 'We are Signals, a female fronted indie / post math rock four-piece from the South of England. We take collective inspiration from artists such as Bon Iver, Thrice, Local Natives, Manchester Orchestra, As Tall As Lions, and Tubelord, amongst others. From this, we have created an eclectic mix of intricate melodies and ambient guitarscapes, held together with energetic rhythm sections - all entwined with subtle and soaring three-part harmony.' Why not have a little listen and see what you make of it. They have a 5 track EP called 'Square Wheels' for sale for £4 on their BandCamp page. Scraps is the work of Brisbane's enigmatic synth pop songstress Laura Hill who wears her obsession with 80s synth rock on her sleeve, citing The Human League, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, A Flock of Seagulls, OMD, Gary Numan and Devo as influences. The 80s loom large in her subject matter as well. Lead track 1982 is a love/tribute song to all the machines that didn't get the girl in movies like Short Circuit and Electric Dreams, where the machines are much more interesting than the men. The 7 inch single Secret Paradise (out 23 July) was premiered on Radio One when Huw Stephens featured Critical Heights as his Label of Love. The video can be seen here and her 3 track single can be brought directly from here. Ellen Louise is a 17 year old singer/songwriter from Redditch. I randomly discovered her music as a result of clicking around on SoundCloud and saw her on Gabrielle Aplin's page, saw that she was from Redditch and thought since there's a big lack of local music on this blog, I'd give her a bit of coverage. I don't know anything else about her other than that as she only has a SoundCloud page and there's hardly any info there, but the music is lovely. I've sent her a message asking if she has any original songs and if she has any gigs coming up. When I know, I'll let you know but in the meantime, we'll both have to make do with this. Here's a lovely bit of indie pop from Seattle's own Seapony. The band is Jen Weidl (vocals and guitar), Danny Rowland (guitar), & Ian Brewer (bass). Their first release was the 3-song 'Dreaming' single followed by their debut album, Go With Me which puts Jen Weidl's youthful melancholia and yearning on display and wraps it in a blanket of twee/surf/jangle pop. Whilst doing a bit of research for this piece I read that: 'Most songs on Go With Me use no more than three chords, with an average running time of around two-and-a-half minutes. In lieu of a human drummer, the Seattle trio entrusts time-keeping to a vintage gizmo the size of a desktop calculator. The lyrics to 'Dreaming', the track that catapulted them into the spotlight, are just six lines long.' Signed to the mighty Sub Pop offshoot label Hardly Art, this is track 3 from their forthcoming second album 'Falling' which is set for release on 11th September, why not get ahead on things and add this to your collection now. I'd recommend this for fans of 'The Scool', 'Girls Names', 'Blouse', 'Beach Fossils', 'Widowspeak', and 'Le Sera' plus the brilliantly named 'Kids on a Crime Spree'. You'll want to go to the SoundCloud page itself to see the download link. |
Making your music folder better, one song at a time.
_Pretty much everyday I seem to find some amazing exclusive tracks that
some awesome artists are giving away for free as a special one off
promotion. Today, it occured to me that instead of just downloading
them, maybe reposting them on facebook if they're special enough/someone I know and
then moving on, I should start a little music blog on here. Even if it
doesn't last forever, it's still a free song for you each day that it
does! I'd say the character of this blog is mostly electropop and singer/songwriter but I've got plans for mathcore, post-rock and glitch-hop. A lot of these tracks have a download limit of 100 so get in there on the quick. I'd also point out that a lot of the songs will need renaming once you've downloaded them so I'd do them one at a time. Archives
