"I was back inside for the last act, the almighty Dissidence. By this time, the bar had run of beer, had stopped serving and was actually letting people bring in their own drinks. Dissidence are metallic hardcore geniuses who have had a good following in Worcester for a while now, and rightly so - in fact, I can't think of a band more deserving of closing the Pig and Drum for good than them. By this point, the P.A was nearly destroyed, the sound further worsened by the fact the pub was crammed full of sweating bodies. Somehow, all this combined to create a performance Dissidence will have to work hard to beat. Devoid of all the subtleties a decent P.A would have afforded them, the sound was broken down to the level of pure rhythmic noise, perfect for the venting of all the energy that was pent up, the ideal soundtrack for happy carnage, a celebration of years and years of merry drinking and pushing your mates over to underground bands screaming their hearts out for little more than petrol money, a massive outward sign of the squats, house parties, DIY gigs and simply not giving in. I don't think I am exaggerating in saying that anyone who was there will not forget that moment for the rest of their lives. Pure genius, pure brilliance." - Johnny Kowalski on The Last Ever Pig Gig 3rd April 2010
I'm going to copy and paste this because there's simply no way I can write a better review of Dissidence than Johnny Kowalski did. "I was back inside for the last act, the almighty Dissidence. They used to practice in my basement and look at them now. They're a local Worcester 3-piece noisy outfit, a bit grunge, a bit punk rock, a little bit way, a little bit wah and coming to a venue near you. They say their personal influences include; The Pixes, Led Zepplin, Black Flag, Sound Garden, Iggy and the Stooges, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Beat Happening, The Velvet Underground, Mudhoney, Love Battery and Nirvana. Really, you don't need to know that, it's just a good way to pad this out and make it look like I've written more than I have. Craig's putting on a gig at The Brewery Tap on Thursday 17th April and The Rusty Knives will be there playing with Ria, whom (if you're reading this in chronological order) you'll find in the post below. Not just one free track, but thirteen!! A full free album from this outstanding Worcester singer/songwriter. This is a brilliant and sadly over-looked album that's been expertly crafted from the subtle open that builds to the nice full chorus of 'Harder Roads to Come' to the simple arrangement of 'Almighty Conscience', this album is flawless. I insist that you add it to your library right now. Ah Jenny, where to start? If you don't know already, she's kind of a big deal. It's her album launch/birthday party double whammy celebration next weekend. Here's a brief bit of the write up I gave her for the next issue of SLAP Magazine. 'Rather than filling your living room with balloons and having some friends round on your birthday, Jenny Hallam is releasing her first album, putting on a gig, organising coach trips to London and back for a mega-party – and you’re invited! At just 19 (at the time of print) Jenny has already played the likes of Westfest, Mappfest, the Pyramid Party and most recently The Colwall Family festival. She moved to London to attend university and wasted no time in making music connections down there and becoming a regular at several open mic nights before being noticed and offered gigs around the area. She’s even supported Placebo’s drummer’s band Planes but she still found the time in her busy schedule to come back and play my birthday party in November, something which I’ll be eternally grateful for.' So, with that in mind, here's a nice little bit of promo for her. Jenny's fantastic album (I know, I've already heard it) is out next week but you can get a sneak peak of it with a different arrangement of BBQ Sauce. Enjoy. Long-term friend and current housemate, Craigus Barry has really outdone himself with this, The Quiver EP. He's put the whole thing on BandCamp for free download so get it now before he changes his mind and if after hearing it you're moved to buy a copy (you probably will be) then you can get a physical copy for a mere £3. To save me from waffling on, I'll just copy and paste what he has to say about it. 'The musicians who worked on it were unbelievable! Hywel who recorded Starry Lion and Quiver has excelled himself in capturing my vision of these tracks! Ricky at Studio Neck; Who mastered/mixed tracks 4/5 and 6, likewise put his own slant on these 8 track recordings. This EP is unlike anything else floating around: a micro cosm concept ep of sorts! Utterly self contained! The emphasis on this release has been on quality over quantity. Many thanx to those involved and those who have purchased a copy already.' |
Making your music folder better, one song at a time.
_Pretty much everyday I seem to find some amazing exclusive tracks that
some awesome artists are giving away for free as a special one off
promotion. Today, it occured to me that instead of just downloading
them, maybe reposting them on facebook if they're special enough/someone I know and
then moving on, I should start a little music blog on here. Even if it
doesn't last forever, it's still a free song for you each day that it
does! I'd say the character of this blog is mostly electropop and singer/songwriter but I've got plans for mathcore, post-rock and glitch-hop. A lot of these tracks have a download limit of 100 so get in there on the quick. I'd also point out that a lot of the songs will need renaming once you've downloaded them so I'd do them one at a time. Archives
