'Inspired by the finger-picking folk musicians of this time and that Harrison Bruce takes his influences and incorporates them into his own music. Giving you that bluesy folk that is hard to find in this day and age. Harrison was born in the Midlands and grew up listening to Cash, Dylan and many more classic artists that shaped his sound.'
Harrison Bruce is a folk singer/songwriter from Worcestershire who I heard on the BBC Gloucester Introducing show and immediately thought 'Wow, I need to book this guy for the radio show!' A quick google led me to his facebook page, which in turn sent me to his bandcamp page which resulted in me writing this blog. I'll be able to say much more about him once he's been into the studio and we've recorded a session with him, but in the meantime we'll both have to make do with his biog: 'Inspired by the finger-picking folk musicians of this time and that Harrison Bruce takes his influences and incorporates them into his own music. Giving you that bluesy folk that is hard to find in this day and age. Harrison was born in the Midlands and grew up listening to Cash, Dylan and many more classic artists that shaped his sound.'

Benji Tranter is a singer/songwriter from Hereford who lives in London. Here we have his lovely take on the Mystery Jets song 'Hand Me Down', you can hear the original by clicking here. NOTE: This download is a .wav file which is 32MB so you'll want to run it through an mp3 converter if you want to keep it. I wish musicans on SoundCloud would realise that people don't want wavs. Benji Tranter is a singer/songwriter from Hereford who lives in London and who akes some lovely music. He's recently played a bunch of festivals, started recording his first album and has released his first music video 'Wolf-Cub' which you can see by clicking here. Up for grabs today is the 'Crayons E.P.' from 2009 Benji Tranter is a folk singer/songwriter from Hereford who lives in London. Today what's on offer is a track that he describes as a christmas songs and 80's pop pastiche. It definetely makes me think of 80's christmas jumpers and Wham! Download it and when Christmas comes around this year, you can add it to your own original x-mas playlist and advoid all the overplaying cheesy christmas singles. There'll be no cars big as bars or pistols carved out of wood, just some decent singer/songwriters, that's how it's going to be going down in my house anyway. Once again we are treated to the dreamy vocals of Devon based singer/songwriter Alice Jemima. I've written a couple of blogs on here about her music and meeting her at the Wychwood festival where she was greeted off the stage by new fans who were queuing up to get their t-shirts signed. Here we have a Strangers song 'Safe / Pain' which Alice has made completely her own, in the same way she covered Rihanna's 'Only Girl in the World' and Lana del Rey's 'Million Dollar Man'. You should already know by now, especially when it comes to this girl, do yourself a big favour and click the download button right now, just incase there's a download limit on this awesomeness, Helen Arney is another discovery that I made at this year's Wychwood festival. She was part of the Robin Ince Science show and performed songs on her ukulele. Based in London, Helen is a comedian, geek songstress, one third of science comedy phenomenon Festival of the Spoken Nerd, and half of the greatest comedy girlband you’ve never heard of, The Balconettes. Have a listen to the song below and I just know that you'll want it in your collection. Ah go on, click 'download'. I spent 6 days in a field in the pouring rain to bring you these tips! Alice Jemima is an 18 year old singer/songwriter from Devon. I've already mentioned her on here before so rather than repeat myself, I figured I'd repeat some facts from her official website incase you're not already familiar with Alice or her music. If that's the case, click play below and have a listen while you read the rest of this. 2011 saw Alice Jemima performing at a couple of high profile gigs, including the unveiling of the Olympic Rings at St Pancras International (where she played to the likes of Seb Coe and Boris Johnson). She was selected from hundreds for a spot on the BBC introducing stage at Wychwood Festival where Elisa Bray (Independent Newspaper) declared Alice to be ‘first and top of my list’. And chosen by BBC Introducing Bristol to ‘demonstrate the terrifically high standard and variety of music in the local area’ by playing at the BBC’s first live gig in Bristol. Radio 1’s Rob da Bank played Alice Jemima, and later in the year, Tom Robinson at Radio 6 courtesy of Breaking More Waves Blog who lined Alice Jemima up alongside the likes of Rizzle Kicks, Curxes and made her the lead choice of song with ‘Red Coat’, produced in the studio of Grammy nominated producer Andy Chatterley and Jason Tarver, both of whom worked with Kylie Minogue on her album Aphrodite. BBC Bristol have been heralding Alice Jemima since her win at Teenage Rampage, Exeter in 2010, and she is a regular on their BBC introducing slot. Look, that's enough writing and reading, by now you'll have heard enough to have made up your mind and I'll bet good money that the song is already in your downloads folder. Well done you, make yourself a hot chocolate, break open the biscuits and have another listen to it. John-Joe Murray is a man who's had his finger is many musical pies over the years. He wrote his bio as follows: The Worrisome Ankletrout is a one man band who makes songs by flopping between instruments with strings on them, whilst using a loop pedal to fill in the gaps and occasionally hitting things that are lying around and squealing like a killer whale; a carnival of aural delights. Go to the SoundCloud page for the free download. Another fantastic song from Brooklyn based singer/songwriter Ivana XL. Oh see my broken legs? Casts on both of them It's just a token of his love, it's just a token of his love Lord Jesus hear my prayer so that I may some day walk again Have mercy on me, a miserable sinner Have mercy on me. I discovered Alice Jemima at the BBC Introducing stage at Wychwood festival in 2011 whilst working the festival and helping bands load in. It's hard to believe she's only 17, like right now! I remember when I was 17 (feels like a lifetime ago) I was cruising around in a stolen BMW, blasting out Dr Dre and being a right little terror, but Alice is on the right track. I'd love to have her come and play in Worcester but she lives in Devon so the train fair alone makes that one a very hard/expensive proposition. So, to get us all through, here is her take on a The Bird and The Bee song called 'Heard It on the Radio'. Whilst you're at it, click here to see a video she made for a competition to support Nerina Pallot. |
Making your music folder better, one song at a time.
_Pretty much everyday I seem to find some amazing exclusive tracks that
some awesome artists are giving away for free as a special one off
promotion. Today, it occured to me that instead of just downloading
them, maybe reposting them on facebook if they're special enough/someone I know and
then moving on, I should start a little music blog on here. Even if it
doesn't last forever, it's still a free song for you each day that it
does! I'd say the character of this blog is mostly electropop and singer/songwriter but I've got plans for mathcore, post-rock and glitch-hop. A lot of these tracks have a download limit of 100 so get in there on the quick. I'd also point out that a lot of the songs will need renaming once you've downloaded them so I'd do them one at a time. Archives
