Maya has locked horns with some of the biggest, most-forward thinking producers in the business – including Flood (Depeche Mode, The Killers, PJ Harvey), Dave McCracken (Roc Nation, Beyonce, Oh Land) and Dimitri Tikovoi (Placebo, The Horrors, Nicola Roberts) – to help produce her debut solo album. She also brought her new found love for club-land beats to the writing sessions for Nicola Roberts - Maya penned the Girls Alouder’s first hit ‘Beat of My Drum’ that was produced by Dimitri Tikovoi and Diplo. ‘’For Nicola I’d imagined a ‘Pon de Floor’ style song that was overlaid with Uffie-like vocals and cheerleader chants… and everyone loved it. I was happy to bring a slice of the underground to the forefront of UK pop!’‘

Benji Tranter is a folk singer/songwriter from Hereford who currently lives in London. What we've got there is a two track single called 'Lucky and the Spur of the Moment' from 2010. If you like what you hear here then he has several festival dates coming up so keep an eye open for him, I know for a fact that he'll be playing at Nozstock festival so maybe if you're local, you'll see him there. He's also working on recording his first album so 2012 looks set to be an interesting year for this young Hereford musician. __Put Paloma Faith, Graham Coxon and Bill Ryder-Jones together in a studio and what do you get? Desire. This track was created by this awesome trio as the next in line of exclusive music collaborations, none of which I've actually heard. In the video Paloma, Graham, Bill and an octopus take you for a ride through the crazy world of Desire. The video is great and as far as I'm concerned, Paloma can do no wrong. I've popped the video here to save you having to click around trying to find it, it's right here, and it's pretty awesome. I've realised the majority of the artists I'm highlighing/showcasing/what-have-you are female so try to help balance it a little, here's a random one for you to try on for size. _Alessi's Ark is a wonderful folky singer/songwriter. I had (and still have I suspose) a ticket to see her playing a gig with George Pringle in Manchester in early 2009 around the time Notes from the Treehouse came out. Dream line-up! Sadly I couldn't go due to a load of sudden unforseen drama but if I'd gone it probably would have been the best gig (for me) of that whole year!
If you 'like' her facebook page via this link you can download her lovely cover of 'Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want' by The Smiths. You won't be disappointed. Victoria Christina Hesketh is better known by her stage name 'Little Boots' and first caught my attention in late 2007 with her bedroom demo track videos when she was building her fanbase via YouTube channel. By the time she released her fantastic electropop album 'Hands' her popularity had grown massively, her first single 'New in Town' was everywhere. I remember being inNew York at the time and hearing it in various places over there and thinking 'Wow, this is that singer from Dead Disco?!' Here's a 40 minute mixtape that she put together featuring a mix of Factory Floor, Screamin' Rachael and Roxy Music. It's pretty dancy, a bit house, very electro. It's also in WAV format and 411MB so you may want to have a listen to it first and see if it's your cup of tea before downloading it and running it through an mp3 converter. Some helpful soul on SoundCloud worked out a tracklisting, with only two unidentified tracks, do you know what they are? Factory Floor - Two Different Ways Azari & III - Reckless (Tiga remix) Deee-Lite - What Is Love (Holographic Goatee mix) Kim Ann Foxman - Creature Roxy Music - Love is the Drug (Todd Terje Dub) ??? Larry Heard - The Sun Can't Compare Screamin' Rachael - Fun With Bad Boys (Jack Me Bad Boy mix) ??? Kylie Minogue - Slow (remix) L-Vis 1990 - Feel the Void Little Boots - Into the Future _ _Still Corners are a band formed in 2008 in London. Built on the siren-like vocals of Tessa Murray and atmospheric songs of Greg Hughes, they create a wash of eerie love songs. Hughes’s self-released EP titled “Remember Pepper?” (2008) quickly gained momentum with the indie blogoshere and paved the way to a string of live shows. This genre is known as Dream Pop, have a listen and see what you think, if you like it, add it to your music folder. Job done. I'm a big Emmy the Great fan so it's a pleasure to be able to share some of her music with people who may not already be familiar her. Emmy's known for her witty and really well written lyrics. That being said, this blatantly isn't the best example, (you'd be better off clicking here) but it is free after all. _For me growing up, BritPop was my coming of age music. I was mad about Guns n' Roses, Nirvana and Iron Maiden growing up but it was around the time of BritPop that I was really finding my feet as a person. I was like 17, had long since moved out of home, had my own place and a job so money and to quote Jez from Peep Show "BritPop was just kicking off, Four Weddings had just come out, it was mmmental!" Echobelly, Sleeper and Elastica are without doubt my favourites from that time (although I loved it all - and still do!) but for me Sonya's voice and Glenn's guitar work really set them apart. Echobelly have since disbanded and now Sonya and Glenn are a two piece called 'Calm of Zero' and as a quick look at their website will show you, have released a 6 track acoustic ep, but as well as that, they now have a lovely track that was recorded on Glenn's home studio called 'Autumn Angel'. Enjoy. _I first heard Charli's music early last year when Sohodolls front woman and now super producer Maya von Doll booked her to play one of her 'Shut Your Pretty Mouth' nights in Soho. I knew if Maya was tipping her then she must be good. I checked her out and yeah, she's pretty damn cool. For Valentine's Day, (and today only!) she's uploaded a track to SoundCloud and is letting everyone have it as a FREE download, for today only. (Note: Although that link has long since expired, I found that someone else has uploaded it to SoundCloud. You can only stream it but at least you can hear it.) |
Making your music folder better, one song at a time.
_Pretty much everyday I seem to find some amazing exclusive tracks that
some awesome artists are giving away for free as a special one off
promotion. Today, it occured to me that instead of just downloading
them, maybe reposting them on facebook if they're special enough/someone I know and
then moving on, I should start a little music blog on here. Even if it
doesn't last forever, it's still a free song for you each day that it
does! I'd say the character of this blog is mostly electropop and singer/songwriter but I've got plans for mathcore, post-rock and glitch-hop. A lot of these tracks have a download limit of 100 so get in there on the quick. I'd also point out that a lot of the songs will need renaming once you've downloaded them so I'd do them one at a time. Archives
